Sylvia Solo
Virginia Crooks
I’m Rachael Posnak, and I design prints celebrating the weirdness and wildness of animals, while also exploring humanity's relationship with nature. I have several prints available now (link in bio); keep a lookout for more coming soon.
The name "Crooks & Solo" doesn't directly relate to animals; instead, it honors two women captured in the images you see here. These are my grandmothers, Virginia Crooks and Sylvia Solo, whose maiden names inspire the project's title. They were both strong and brilliant individuals, each unique in her own right.
Sylvia, a second-generation Jewish woman hailing from Brooklyn, was sharp-witted with a delightful, acerbic tongue. She battled periods of depression, stemming from unexplored potential and a sense of ennui.
Virginia grew up in the Midwest, and became a newspaper reporter at the young age of 17. She later married and opened a home decor store. She was an example of strength to me…I remember her giving me a pep talk and urging me to be brave one summer when I was terrified of starting 3rd grade (because of a harsh teacher).
I often wonder what even greater joys might have enriched their lives had circumstances granted them more opportunities. This is a tribute to Virginia Crooks and Sylvia Solo, and all the women who paved the way. Follow Crooks & Solo on instagram
